Buying It Back

Residents and local businesses, through recycling their cartridges with Cartridges for Planet Ark, have diverted tonnes of plastic and electronic waste from landfill for over 15 years. But collecting the “waste” cartridges is just the beginning of an innovative process to turn waste back into valuable products.

Cartridges for Planet Ark can provide real environmental benefits back into your local community through one of its end recycled products TonerPlas.

TonerPlas is an asphalt additive, comprised of waste toner from printer cartridges, as well as soft plastics from the RedCycle program. It is a valuable waste solution for mixed plastics and an alternative to oil derived additives.

To date, almost 2000kms of TonerPlas roads have been laid, in over 50 council regions across Australia. For every one-kilometre section of two-lane local asphalt road, five tonnes of TonerPlas is used, which equates to 530,000 plastic bags and waste toner from 12,300 cartridges.

The success of this recycling program is thanks to the voluntary participation of its partners; including Brother, Canon, Epson, HP and Kyocera. These manufacturers have acknowledged the importance of creating a circular system by recycling their products.

Now is the perfect time for your council to also engage with the circular economy, with Cartridges 4 Planet Ark and TonerPlas providing a closed loop service. Plastic waste collected by your residents turned into a valuable asphalt additive and used to build better quality roads in your council region.
